Just in time for the Halloween season, Pioneer Theatre Company presents the diabolical musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Hugh Wheeler based on an adaption by Christopher Bond. The Tony-Award winning musical opens October 26, 2018 and runs through November 10, 2018.

Widely acknowledged as Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece, Sweeney Todd tells a dark tale of vengeance and murder, leavened with ghoulish humor, in Victorian London. Returning after being wrongly imprisoned, Sweeney vows revenge on the Judge who incarcerated him, and finds an unlikely ally in Mrs. Lovett, the owner of a struggling meat pie shop who finds a good use for Sweeney’s victims.

KEVIN EARLEY plays Sweeney Todd, returning to PTC after 2012’s A Christmas Carol: The Musical. Earley’s Broadway and National Tour credits include: Death Takes a Holiday, Les Misérables, Thoroughly Modern Millie and A Tale of Two Cities.

ANNE TOLPEGIN returns to PTC after Sting’s The Last Ship to perform as Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney’s accomplice and business partner. Tolpegin has appeared on Broadway in A Tale of Two Cities and Les Misérables as well as numerous Off-Broadway shows.

DELANEY WESTFALL, a Utah native, performs as Sweeney’s daughter, Johanna – a role she also performed Off-Broadway. Other roles include Kinky Boots and Side Show on Broadway, and a national tour of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. JONATHAN SHEW, previously seen in last season’s Newsies, returns to PTC as Johanna’s love interest Anthony Hope. Shew also appeared on Broadway in Bandstand and the National Tour of Wicked.

JOE DELLGER returns to PTC, performing as Judge Turpin. At PTC he played Birling in An Inspector Calls, and on Broadway he was Father in Ragtime, The Coroner in Porgy and Bess, Magnus in Lestat and Herst in Scandalous.

ERIC SANTAGATA is The Beadle, after previously being in It Happened One Christmas, The Rocky Horror Show and Rent at PTC. Some Broadway credits include Falsettos, The Scottsboro Boys, Prince of Broadway, Bullets Over Broadway, Chaplin and The Apple Tree.

LAURA HALL plays The Beggar Woman She is returning to PTC, having previously been seen in Something’s Afoot and A Christmas Carol: The Musical. She made her Broadway debut in Wonderland and toured with Diane Paulus’ revival of Pippin. Hall also toured for five years with the musical theatre sketch comedy group The Water Coolers. TV: “Shades of Blue” and “The Today Show.”

BLAKE STADNIK makes his PTC debut as Tobias Ragg. Other credits include the National Tours of 42nd Street (Billy Lawlor), Newsies (Crutchie) and Les Misérables (Marius). Stadnik, a legally blind actor, is also an advocate for disabled artists.

LUCY ANDERS, JEFFERSON BEHAN, LENNY DANIEL, JAMES DONEGAN and MARY FANNING DRIGGS, comprise the remaining equity actors.

MICHELLE BLAKE, PAYTON BOWEN, PATRICK RYAN CASTLE, TIMOTHY AARON COOPER, CAMERON HOLZMAN and MEGAN SHENEFELT complete the ensemble.

Pioneer Theatre Company Artistic Director KAREN AZENBERG directs and choreographs this production. Azenberg is in her seventh season as Artistic Director and directed the regional premiere of Oslo this September. Last season she directed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Newsies, /i/ and In the Heights ­– Concert Version.

PHIL RENO returns to PTC after 2017’s The Will Rogers Follies: Life in Revue and Chess – Concert Version. Broadway productions include Something Rotten!, Promises, Promises, Elf-The Musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Producers, Thou Shalt Not, Dame Edna: The Royal Tour, Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance and Cats. His work can be heard on the Grammy-nominated soundtrack recordings of Something Rotten! and The Drowsy Chaperone cast albums.

GEORGE MAXWELL is the resident scenic designer. Maxwell has designed over 100 productions for the company. His most recent design was for 2017’s Newsies.

Resident Designer BRENDA VAN DER WIEL is designing the costumes for the show, returning after last season’s Mamma Mia!. She is also a part of the design faculty for the University of Utah Theatre Department and serves as head of the Performing Arts Design Program.

Lighting Designer PAUL MILLER continues his work at PTC, returning after last season’s Mamma Mia! and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. His Broadway credits include Amazing Grace, The Illusionists, Legally Blonde, Freshly Squeezed and Laughing Room Only.

SARAH SHIPPOBOTHAM is the dialect coach. Hair and Makeup Designer is AMANDA FRENCH; sound design is by PTC Resident Sound Designer ALLAN BRANSON.
