Bomba Marilé is pleased to announce it has been awarded money from the Salt Lake City Arts Council Project Support Grant, Western States Arts Federation, and the National Endowment for the Arts to share an entire day of free bomba music and dance with the community. The event, entitled Caretakers of our Musical Traditions, will take place on Saturday November 4th, 2023 at the Sorenson Unity Center on 1383 S 900 W in Salt Lake City.
The day will start off with free bomba percussion class from 9:30-11am by the respected Afro-Puerto Rican instructor straight from Puerto Rico Felipe Febres Rivera. Then, from 11:30-1pm the renowned Jose Nuno Calderon will be here from Puerto Rico to give a free bomba dance workshop. Afterwards, we will have a panel disucssion from 3-4:30 which will include Jose Nuno Calderon, Mabiba Baegne, and Larry Cesspooch to discuss the importance of honoring our elders in maintaining our cultural knowldege. Finally, the community is invited to sing and dance with us as we share free live music from the Kennedy Junior High Mariachi Band and from Bomba Marilé.
