Good Company Theatre announces its long-awaited return to producing with Queer the Stage: The Golden Age. It is the first edition of an original series of cabaret performances.
This cheeky and fresh series invites some of the Utah theatre community’s most out and talented performers to explore the ways gayness has shown up in the American Theatre since its origins. Starting with The Golden Age, between approximately 1940 and 1960, Queer the Stage will take a sonic duck walk through various eras of and themes in musical theatre, bringing attention to the ways queers have uniquely contributed to Broadway music and made better this most American of artforms.
“The Golden Age of the musical was also a very hostile time for queer people in the United States, not unlike what we’re experiencing today,” explains GCT Co-Director Camille Washington. “We’ve been writing, singing, and performing this music since before Vaudeville became Broadway.”
“There is no musical theatre without the LGBTQIA+ community,” states GCT Founder and Co-Director Alicia Washington. “Period.”
Queer the Stage: The Golden Age runs April 21-30, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 4PM.
Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 24. The cast will be announced at a later date. There will likely be coarse language. Discretion is advised. They are $25 online at www.goodcotheatre.com and at the door. Special discounts for Trans and Nonbinary people, and QTPOC are available by emailing email@example.com.
