The Craft Lake City New Americans Workshop Series Instructor Feature: Zubaidah Sadeq!

Craft Lake City

Earlier this month Craft Lake City launched a new addition to our year-round programming: the New Americans Workshop Series. Each craft workshop in the series will be taught by makers from around the globe who’ve made Utah their home due to humanitarian crises in their countries of origin. This series of six workshops, running from November 2022 through April 2023, is made possible with the support of the International Rescue Committee and funding from the Salt Lake Arts Council. Craft Lake City couldn’t be happier to be kicking off the series with one of our own DIY Fest alum, Zubaidah Sadeq of Zubaidah Boutique

On Thursday, November 10, 2022 Zubaidah will be teaching an Embroidered Painting Workshop at the Craft Lake City HQ from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. In this mixed media Embroidered Painting Workshop participants will learn some fun techniques for creating a lovely, sophisticated and abstract background texture with paint to prep their canvases for stitchwork, as well as the essential skills to embroider a gorgeous and custom design on their painting. Zubaidah will have several embroidery design templates available to choose from inspired by her home country of Iraq, or participants can create their own design to embroider over their painted canvas.

While Zubaidah Boutique primarily sells elegant, handmade jewelry, Zubaidah actually got her start working with fiber arts. “I have a passion for arts and crafts, so the passion alone motivates me to get going,” writes Zubaidah when prompted with the question: What inspired you to do this craft? “Since my childhood, I have had a passion for disassembling and assembling things to see what they would look like in a new way, or to learn how they are made. As I got older my skills in this talent have grown and evolved. I always have new ideas to create new, beautiful things that make people happy.” Zubaidah is thrilled to have the opportunity to teach her first workshop through the New Americans Workshop Series. “Teaching is a way of serving my community. I’m really glad I’ll have the chance to talk about my passion.”

As part of this six-part series, Craft Lake City is offering three full scholarships to each workshop based on financial need. To browse our upcoming workshops and to purchase tickets visit https://craftlakecity.com/craft-workshops/.
