Friends of The City Library support The Salt Lake City Public Library

City Library

For five decades, The Friends of the Salt Lake City Public Library have been forwarding initiatives to support the library system of Utah’s capital city. In 2021 the Friends of the City Library donated $100,000 to the Salt Lake City Library to support early literacy programs, the summer reading program, special events, and speakers. The Friends are a vital sister organization to The City Library and offer four pathways for residents to get involved: Membership, Volunteering, Book Sales, and Book Donations.

Anyone can become a member of The Friends of The City Library for a nominal financial donation. Details can be found at slclibraryfriends.org/membership. Membership has privileges and will get you early admission to the upcoming Members Only Used Book Sale on Saturday, October 15, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Main Library at 210 East 400 South.

If supporters would rather donate their time to the organization, volunteer opportunities abound! The Friends of The City Library always need help with sorting donations, upcoming sales, or even listing books for sale online from home. More information can be found at slclibraryfriends.org/volunteer.

A large portion of the funds raised by The Friends of The City Library come from their used book sales. The Monster Used Book Sale will be happening daily from October 20 to October 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Main Library. On offer are a well-rounded collection of materials for all ages, all available at bargain prices. Including A Half-Price Happy Hour on Thursday, October 20, from 2 – 5 p.m., “Early Bird $10 Bags” on Friday, October 2,1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and “Close Out Blow Out $10 Bags: on Saturday, October 22 from 3 – 6 p.m.

Another way to support The Friends of The City Library is to donate gently-used books, CDs, DVDs, BluRays, or vinyl records. Physical donations are accepted at any of the eight branches of the city library. However, the semi-annual “Book Donation Drive” will be on Saturday, October 29, where volunteers will be accepting donations curbside at the Main Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Jeff Mower, Executive Director of The Friends of The City Library says, “The City Library is a tremendous resource and gathering space for our community. They provide life-changing services of all kinds to our community every single day. The Friends support our beloved library through fundraising, membership, and advocacy. Our used book sales provide the opportunity to obtain books at bargain prices while simultaneously supporting the library. It’s a win for everybody!”
