Utah Cheese Awards expands to judge cheese plate foods from the Intermountain West

The 5th Utah Cheese Awards contest concluded judging Monday awarding 45 medals and two Best-of-Shows from 81 entries submitted by 18 companies across six Mountain West states.

The show was started by a longtime commercial artist, but newbie turophile Steve Jerman, in 2017. It has grown to a production of 14, including judges and volunteers with two judging locations.

The Salt Lake judging returned to Beehive Distilling in South Salt Lake on Saturday, August 21. Invited judges there were; Tosha Rustad of Cafe La Muse d’Or and Krissie Holifield of the I am Salt Lake podcast. Joining them were Jordan Davis of Mooonbread sourdough seminars, and Dave Baugh a Kaysville CPA and craft food buff.

On Monday, August 23 USU’s Bluesquare Building was once again the location as Utah Artisan Mercantile returned as a sponsor. Invited judges were Dave Irish, the manager of Aggie Creamery, and Greg Parry, a sales representative for Haderlie Farms of Thayne, Wyoming.

Joining them were judges who came from Media Sponsor Utah Public Radio’s Producer Circle of supporters which included Cache Valley residents Dr. Julie Young, Darlene Jensen, and Nadra Haffar.

The local newspaper, The Logan Herald Journal was on hand to take photographs for a feature story on the event.

A Northern Utah public medal ceremony and tasting reception is being planned and the complete results will be posted on by November 15. Those interested in judging in 2022 are urged to write .
