USU Presents Art + Piano + Sculpture: A Celebration of Women Composers Past & Present

Art + Piano + Sculpture: A Celebration of Women Composers Past & Present is Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall at Utah State University’s main campus in Logan.

The program features works written by women from 1800 through present, performed by Elzbieta Bilicka, Emily Ezola, Mayumi Matzen, Kevin Olson and new piano faculty member, Cahill Smith. The evening also includes the world premiere of a piece for two pianos written by nationally acclaimed composer Wynn-Anne Rossi. The piece was commissioned especially for USU’s Year of the Woman. Rossi will be at the concert to introduce the piece and talk to the audience about her creative process.

Rossi’s compositions have inspired audiences across the United States and around the world. She has more than 120 publications, primarily for piano, which are widely distributed online and in music stores. Her repertoire also includes works for vocal and chamber groups, concert band and orchestra.

Selected music will be illustrated by artist Chuck Landvatter, who will be on stage with the musicians. His artwork will be projected for the audience to see come to life in real time.

“If all of this isn’t exciting enough, sculptors Ryoichi Suzuki and Myles Howell will present new pieces created especially for this concert experience,” Ezola said. “The sculptures will be positioned on stage and the audience will get a chance to see them close up during the sculpture walk at intermission.”

Illustrations and sculptures will be auctioned following the concert and a portion of the proceeds will go towards piano area scholarships.

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Tickets are $10 adults, $8 seniors, USU faculty/staff and free for USU students with ID and grades 3-12.
