Downtown Alliance Issues Statement Following the Passing of Tom Guinney

We are saddened to learn that Tom Guinney has passed away. Downtown has lost one of its greatest developers and restaurateurs.

All of us who enjoy the vibrant hospitality scene downtown owe Tom a debt of gratitude.

It is no coincidence that dozens of Salt Lake’s most vibrant restaurants and bars are clustered around the original Market Street Grill and former New Yorker club. Tom and his partners planted a flag on Market Street that is Salt Lake’s epicurean ground zero.

Gastronomy elevated dining in Salt Lake City. They raised the bar for dining ambiance, cuisine and particularly for dining service. They trained generations of hospitality workers and leaders that are now working in various industries across the state.

In addition to their contributions to Salt Lake’s burgeoning culinary scene, Gastronomy’s adaptive reuse of downtown buildings has preserved many historic gems in our urban core.

We are grateful for Tom’s volunteer service and leadership at the Downtown Alliance, Salt Lake Chamber, Visit Salt Lake and many other community organizations.

We offer our condolences to Tom’s family and his many friends.
